I met with clients yesterday at the Hopkinton Senior Center to help them with their budgets. My goal was to have them look realistically at income, expenses and what was left. While planning I began thinking that budgeting was really boring. Why then did I think it was important enough to create a business about it? If it's not about putting numbers on a piece of paper... what is it about? Yeah, you need to see those numbers to tell you where you're spending, but it also shows you how you're spending. Do you really need those two Starbucks Venti Coffees every day? Could you make it just one? How about going out to eat? Can you afford it every week?
No one I know has an infinite amount of money, so it's all about lifestyle choices. Choose wisely on the small things and you'll have money for the big things, like travel, college education and retirement. Try to spend $5 less a day and at the end of the year you'll have more than $1800. Not bad, you just need to start.
